Jackson Hole Gets Big Snow (and Direct Flights ... - Travel + Leisure

12.13.12

Jackson Hole

The mountain is open at Jackson Hole and eager skiers who?ve been watching the Wyoming weather (to summarize: snow and snow and more powdery snow) will be happy to hear that getting to the Tetons is easier this winter. United is flying directly from Newark and San Francisco and Delta has added direct flights from Minneapolis, bringing the number of cities with direct service to the valley up to nine.

Intermediate skiers (me!) get a little love from the notoriously Black Diamond-heavy resort, too. A recently completed detachable quad lift opened last week to sweep Blue Trail skiers (me!) up to mid-mountain in just three and a half minutes. The Casper trail network has been expanded and buffed and more than half the blue trails are open, even this early in the season, because of the benevolent snow gods have dumped over 130? so far?more than at any other Rockies resort.

A spectacular contender in our America?s Prettiest Winter Towns, Jackson offers more to travelers than just skiing. Just-opened Stio Mountain Studio on the Town Square showcases some cool ski wear with a playful tech vibe. A star of Jackson?s dining scene, Gavin Fine, follows up on successes at Rendezvous Bistro, Q Road House, and Il Villagio Osteria with a new venture this January. Q Roadhouse will begin serving beers and ales crafted at its own Roadhouse Brewery. Offering great barbecue and beer to skiers is the culinary equivalent to shooting fish in a barrel, no? I can?t wait to partake.

To further entice you, T+L?s Hot Deals has active hotel offers at a couple of our favorite properties at the base of the resort: one at the Hotel Terra and the other at Teton Mountain Lodge.

So, there?s fresh powder. There are direct flights. There?s an open mountain and weather that hasn?t gotten too cold yet. There are some world-class hotels with nice offers. There?s great food and shopping. Don?t let all the Teton shots in Tarantino?s Django Unchained be as close to Wyoming as you come this winter. It?s time to head west!
