Fans eager for the return of reality TV's ballroom bash finally got the big news they've been waiting for on Tuesday: The 11 familiar faces set to grace the dance floor when the next season of "Dancing With the Stars" kicks off were revealed. There's just one problem. According to many of those fans, the faces weren't that familiar at all.
It's a common complaint for the show each season. The word "stars" may be in the title, but some feel the definition is stretched.
"I guess I'm really showing my age, but I have only heard of (Wynonna) Judd and (Dorothy Hamill)," reader Lin Redfield posted to our Facebook page. "I have no idea who these other people are."
The others in question happen to be Super Bowl champ Jacoby Jones, actor D.L. Hughely, Lisa Vanderpump of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," boxer Victor Ortiz, actor-comedian Andy Dick, "American Idol" alum Kellie Pickler, soap star Ingo Rademacher, Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman and Zendaya of Disney Channel fame.
But the truth is, Lin was hardly alone in wondering about the so-called celebrity identities.
"'With the Stars'!!!???? Who the heck are 8 out of 11 of those names?" reader Julaine Schexnayder asked. "I have never heard of them so how can I care if they do well or not! I will bet you this, however, the winner will be someone with a well-known name today, not an unknown."
In fact, the complaint about unknown or little-known "stars" was echoed again and again, leaving some to suggest the successful reality TV staple was starting to lose touch with the modern boob-tube world.
"Dancing With The Stars: where The Lawrence Welk show meets The Love Boat," Kevin Doyle joked.
But it wasn't just the celebrity casting news that had fans in a tizzy. While the participating stars -- or well, close enough -- gave viewers plenty to talk about, so did the absence of one ballroom pro.
For only the second time in his 13 seasons with the show, popular pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy -- aka the bad boy of the ballroom -- won't be dancing alongside one of the hoofer hopefuls, and faithful fans weren't pleased about that.
"OMG! will I miss Maks? thats an understatement," Linda Benincasa Fabiano told us. "It will not be the same without him. Not sure if I will be as dedicated to the show now that he is taking a leave."
Kathi Johnson agreed, telling us, "(It's) disappointing, he was one of the highlights of the show."
According to the "Dancing" powers-that-be, Maks' absence is just routine.
"We frequently rotate the professional dancers, so it is not unusual for them to rest a cycle,? ABC said in a statement.
But on Twitter, a reader who goes by JoJo pointed out, "The funny thing is they said they frequently rotate dancers, but I seldom see them rotate Derek (Hough) and Mark (Ballas), or Kym (Johnson)."
That's an especially interesting point in the case of Derek, who announced he was leaving the ballroom last season only to return once again.
What do you think of all the casting news? And which stars would you have rather seen join the ballroom bash? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

A new study led by an international team of biologists has identified some of the brain chemicals that allow seals to sleep with half of their brain at a time.
The study was published this month in the Journal of Neuroscience and was headed by scientists at UCLA and the University of Toronto. It identified the chemical cues that allow the seal brain to remain half awake and asleep. Findings from this study may explain the biological mechanisms that enable the brain to remain alert during waking hours and go off-line during sleep.
"Seals do something biologically amazing ? they sleep with half their brain at a time. The left side of their brain can sleep while the right side stays awake. Seals sleep this way while they're in water, but they sleep like humans while on land. Our research may explain how this unique biological phenomenon happens" said Professor John Peever of the University of Toronto.
The study's first author, University of Toronto PhD student Jennifer Lapierre, made this discovery by measuring how different chemicals change in the sleeping and waking sides of the brain. She found that acetylcholine ? an important brain chemical ? was at low levels on the sleeping side of the brain but at high levels on the waking side. This finding suggests that acetylcholine may drive brain alertness on the side that is awake.
But, the study also showed that another important brain chemical ? serotonin - was present at the equal levels on both sides of the brain whether the seals were awake or asleep. This was a surprising finding because scientist long thought that serotonin was a chemical that causes brain arousal.
These findings have possible human health implications because "about 40% of North Americans suffer from sleep problems and understanding which brain chemicals function to keep us awake or asleep is a major scientific advance. It could help solve the mystery of how and why we sleep" says the study's senior author Jerome Siegel of UCLA's Brain Research Institute.

Each week Joshua Fruhlinger contributes This is the Modem World, a column dedicated to exploring the culture of consumer technology.
The Wii U launch sort of came and went, didn't it? I mean, it's a nice console, but it certainly didn't cause any major waves. In fact, Nintendo only sold 57,000 units in January. For those who don't track game console sales numbers -- and why would you -- that's bad. Very bad.
The Wii U, at least so far, has underwhelmed consumers. There isn't a killer application just yet, and despite some interesting innovation with the touchscreen controller, no one is sitting in his living room, staring at an empty space in his entertainment rack, thinking, "You know what I need? A Wii U."
And now we're all waiting so see what Sony does with the PlayStation 4. Rumors are that they'll do what Sony always does: Pack a ton of technology into a package that will be expensive -- but cost less than it should -- in order to get early adopters on board. It's actually possible that by the time this column is posted, Sony will have already released details about its upcoming hardware and you're too busy oohing and ahhing about frame rates and visual controllers.

Benjamin Netanyahu and Marco Rubio (Photo courtesy of Marco Rubio's office)
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio's drink of water in the middle of his televised response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address earlier this month truly is "the sip heard 'round the world."
At a meeting Wednesday in Jerusalem, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held up a water bottle and toasted the Florida Republican after Rubio told him the story.
?It was totally spontaneous following their more formal photos in front of the U.S. and Israeli flags," a person who was in the room told Yahoo News. "Rubio was directed to his chair and then picked up his water, held it up and said, ?Cheers!? When he sat down he quickly told the story of how he raised a bunch of money by selling water bottles following his SOTU response. The prime minister did the toast with the water bottle, and Sen. Rubio laughingly played along.?
Since the night of Obama's annual address, Rubio's water chugging has been parodied countless times online and was the subject of a Saturday Night Live sketch last week. The Florida senator joined in the fun last Wednesday by selling water bottles on his political action committee website, which has since raised more than $100,000.
Rubio, a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the Foreign Relations Committee, is currently on a trip through the Middle East.

Choices are great, but we can sometimes boost our productivity by limiting them. Web developer Phillip Franziskus has some ideas for reclaiming time to get work done. One of the chief tips: limit your wardrobe.
Franziskus has found that it becomes easier to focus on important tasks by "killing variables"?recurring tasks that require you to make decisions without being very productive.
Here's our favorite:
The guys from Buffer, Joel Gascoigne and Leo Widrich, have a really cool concept of "minimalized clothes selection". They each own only a handful of T-Shirts and jeans (one in fact!). This makes choosing clothes for the day easy so they can focus on their important tasks right from the beginning of the day. It is described in one of their videos here.
Even if you're not the type to restrict yourself to a few shirts and one or two bottoms, your wardrobe could probably benefit from some streamlining.

Manti Te?o will have to blow NFL personnel away at the 2013 Scouting Combine on and off the field in order to salvage his draft stock.
It certainly isn?t looking good for the former senior Notre Dame linebacker and projected first-round pick.
Te?o is coming off of a poor performance during the Fighting Irish?s embarrassing loss to Alabama in the BCS Championship Game. He looked overpowered and outclassed by the NFL-bound linemen of the Crimson Tide.
Sports Illustrated?s Peter King called his performance on that huge stage ?awful.?
To make matters worse, he was subsequently the focal point of national media and social media after an internet hoax rocked his life.
Te?o has been working hard in his preparation for the combine, missing just one day at Chris Weinke?s IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. (according to ESPN?s Pat Yasinskas).
That lone hiccup came when Te?o left camp to do an interview with Katie Couric. The interview aimed to provide damage control to his image after the country sat back in awe in the wake of a tragic and life-altering disclosure about his personal life.
Most players will have scouts and executives dissecting their character and athletic ability at the combine, but none will have the level of scrutiny that Te?o receives.
Is that right? Maybe. Te?o didn?t break rules, get suspended or do anything to question the quality of his character. He was tricked by Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, a 22-year-old male who claimed to be a woman??deeply and romantically in love? with him.
Some even speculated Te?o might have been involved with perpetrating the entire thing as a means to draw attention to propel himself to a Heisman Trophy.
Trust, character and stability are some of the biggest things teams will look at while evaluating players during personal interviews this week in Indianapolis.
Te?o must convince them that he is all of those things and a top-tier player on the field. It?s a challenging mission but not ?Mission Impossible? for one of the most decorated and talented linebackers in this class.
Tyler Eifert, his teammate at Notre Dame, has been training with him in Florida and had some further insight about his preparation (h/t Yasinskas):
"Manti has been the same Manti I went to college with...He's been out on the field working just like he's always worked. I've tried to be there for him, but I don't know that he's needed all that much help because he's such a strong person to begin with."
In the end, we all know the type of player Te'o can be on the field. Initial draft projections do typically change. That happens for many players, scandal or not.
Te'o, one of the most talented defensive prospects in this class, will rise above this and use his performance in Indianapolis, both on and off the field, to help teams remember that.

Feb. 18, 2013 ? A Melbourne-based research team has discovered a genetic defect that can halt cell growth and force cells into a death-evading survival state.
The finding has revealed an important mechanism controlling the growth of rapidly-dividing cells that may ultimately lead to the development of new treatments for diseases including cancer.
The discovery was made by Associate Professor Joan Heath, Dr Yeliz Boglev and colleagues at the Melbourne-Parkville Branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. Dr Kate Hannan, Associate Professor Rick Pearson and Associate Professor Ross Hannon at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, also contributed to the work, which was published in the journal PLOS Genetics this month.
Associate Professor Heath, a Ludwig Institute Member who recently transferred her research group to the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, said the discovery was made while studying zebrafish embryos that harbour genetic mutations which prevent rapid cell growth during organ development. "Zebrafish embryos provide us with a great laboratory model for these studies because they are transparent, an attribute that allows us to track the growth of rapidly developing organs in live animals under a simple microscope. Moreover, the genes controlling growth and proliferation of developing tissues are essentially identical in zebrafish and humans, and are known to be frequently commandeered by cancer cells."
"We discovered that a mutation in a relatively under-studied gene called pwp2h leads to the faulty assembly of ribosomes, the 'protein factories' of cells, and stops cells from dividing," she said. "What was intriguing was that cells under stress from ribosome failure did not die. Instead, the cells switched on a survival mechanism called autophagy and began obtaining nutrients by digesting their own intracellular components."
Ribosomes are large molecular machines in cells that manufacture proteins, and are critical for cell growth and division. Currently, there is great interest in developing therapeutics to block ribosome production, as a strategy to prevent cancer cells from dividing.
"Our research could have implications for this type of cancer treatment," Associate Professor Heath said. "We showed that when ribosome assembly is disrupted, cells stop growing as desired, but to our surprise they enter a survival state. An anti-cancer treatment that inadvertently promotes the survival of cancer cells through autophagy is clearly not desirable. However, our findings in zebrafish show that if ribosome assembly is blocked and, at the same time, autophagy is inhibited, cells die rapidly. It is possible that a combination of inhibitors that block ribosome function and autophagy could provide an effective anti-cancer treatment," she said.
Associate Professor Heath's group is continuing its research at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, examining other genetic mutations in zebrafish that disrupt cell growth and division. "We are keen to enhance our approach by applying existing research technologies at the institute," she said. "We have identified a number of cellular processes that rapidly dividing cells -- including cancer cells -- depend on, and the next stage is to test whether they could provide new targets for anti-cancer therapy."
The research was supported by the National Health and Medical Research Council and the Victorian Government.

HOUSTON ? LeBron James was one of several players to call for Billy Hunter?s firing, but that was already a done deal when NBA players met and officially relieved their long-time executive director of his duties.
James, who previously had taken a limited role in union affairs, was joined by the Nets? Jerry Stackhouse and Denver?s Andre Iguodala on Saturday as being among the most outspoken players in demanding change at the top.
?To his credit, LeBron asked a lot of questions concerning Hunter?s legal problems," said one person who was briefed by several players on the meeting. ?But really, everyone?s minds were made up before the meeting.
?LeBron stayed longer than he needed to. He called for Billy?s firing. But so did Jerry Stackhouse and Andre Iguodala and several other players. LeBron was very good talking about the need for players to do more with the union and to have more representation."
PHOTOS: PHOTOS: KOBE AND WEST DO IN LEBRON'S EAST WITH D AT ALL-STAR GAME
Hunter claimed after the meeting, which he was not invited to attend, that he has not been given a fair hearing to defend himself. Nonetheless, players voted 24-0 to fire him, but he is considering legal action to get the remaining $10.5 million on his contract. The legality of the contract, which was for five years at $15 million, is one of several key issues hounding Hunter, 70, who was in his 17th season as union chief.
The NBA Players? Association is not expected to hire a replacement for Hunter until the late summer, at the earliest.
Players union president Derek Fisher confirmed that Hunter is being investigated by the U.S. Attorney?s office, the New York State attorney general and the Department of Labor for potential criminal wrongdoing involving some of his past business practices, including overseeing the union?s charitable foundation.
Because of his actions that led to a scathing internal review of the union?s business practices and galvanized opposition against Hunter before players descended on Houston for All-Star Weekend, the union?s executive committee of players wants to redo its constitution. That will possibly delay the hiring of Hunter?s successor even longer, since players are not scheduled to convene until late June or early July.
RELATED: STAR CROSSED: WEST WINS NBA ALL-STAR GAME AS KOBE TAKES ON LEBRON AT END
Union sources say that a search firm could be hired to conduct a national campaign to find Hunter?s successor. Interim executive director Ron Klempner has told associates that he is not going to lobby for the job. Klempner has been the union?s long-time counsel and prefers to stay in that role.
?There?s no rush here," said one union member. ?It?s not as if we?re heading back to the bargaining table anytime soon."
The players and owners are in the second year of a 10-year deal. The first time either side can call for the deal to be reopened is in 2017. So theoretically, that would be the first time when Hunter?s successor will have to fulfill his No.?1 duty: not getting outmaneuvered in negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement.
CHANDLER HEATS UP
Tyson Chandler was all smiles leaving his first All-Star Game.
RELATED: LAWRENCE: GIVE STERN A STAR
?The whole weekend was tremendous," said the Knicks? center, who was Erik Spoelstra?s first reserve off the bench. ?I had lot of fun. But if I had to pick one moment in the game, it was probably my first dunk."
In the first quarter, Chandler took a lob feed from Dwyane Wade to slam in his first basket as an All-Star.
?When a Miami guy finds a Knick, that?s pretty wild," Chandler said, smiling.
Chandler had seven points and eight rebounds in 17 minutes.
BROOK FLOWS
Limited as his playing time was, the Nets? Brook Lopez wasn?t awed by his first All-Star appearance, when he got out on the floor for 10 minutes.
Lopez was the last player for the East to see the court. But when asked if he felt he belonged with Dwight Howard and other big men, he said, ?I?m confident I belong. It was an honor to be mentioned in the same class with those guys. Playing with other All-Stars was an incredible experience."
Lopez, an injury replacement for Boston?s Rajon Rondo, finished with three points (all foul shots), five rebounds and three assists.

PALM CITY, Fla. (AP) ? President Barack Obama played golf Sunday with Tiger Woods, the White House said.
Once the sport's dominant player before his career was sidetracked by scandal, Woods joined Obama at the Floridian, a secluded and exclusive yacht and golf club on Florida's Treasure Coast where Obama is spending the long Presidents Day weekend. The two had met before, but Sunday was the first time they played together.
The White House, which has promised to be the most open and transparent in history, has prohibited any media coverage of Obama's golf outing.
The foursome also included Jim Crane, a Houston businessman who owns the Floridian and baseball's Houston Astros, and outgoing U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk, a former mayor of Dallas, said White House spokesman Josh Earnest. Crane and Kirk also were part of Obama's foursome on Saturday, the White House said.
Obama, an avid golfer, also received some instruction Saturday and played a few holes with Butch Harmon, Woods' former swing coach.
Initial word that the First Duffer would play a round with the world's No. 2 player didn't come from the White House, but instead came from veteran golf journalist Tim Rosaforte, who announced it on Twitter. Rosaforte's late-morning tweet said: "The president is arriving at the Floridian range. Awaiting is Tiger Woods and club owner Jim Crane. Historic day in golf. Their first round."
White House confirmation of Woods' participation came about two hours later, following multiple appeals from traveling White House reporters.
Golf Digest reported on its website that Obama spent eight hours Saturday with Harmon, playing 27 holes and hitting balls in Harmon's studio, and then managed to coordinate Sunday's round with Woods. The report said the original plan called for Obama and Woods, a Florida resident, to play at Woods' home club ? The Medalist Golf Club, a half-hour away in Hobe Sound. But they eventually opted for the Floridian.
Woods departed after the first 18 holes, with Obama staying on to play another nine, the report said.
"Just to see the interaction between the two on the range was pretty neat," Harmon told Golf Digest. "The President said to Tiger: 'The last tournament you played was fun to watch. It's good to see you play well again.' You could tell he meant it. It just wasn't a throw it out compliment."
It seems Obama and Woods ? the first black men at the top of their respective fields ? have spent the past few years inching toward Sunday's meeting on the fairway.
They met in January 2009, during Obama's inauguration in Washington. Four months later, in April, Woods visited the White House and Obama received him in the Oval Office.
Woods' personal life imploded later in 2009 after revelations that he had engaged in multiple extramarital affairs, leading to divorce. He followed with a public apology and announced he was taking an indefinite break from golf. Shortly after Woods announced he was coming out of seclusion, Obama said in an interview with Fox News Channel that Woods will still be a "terrific" golfer despite his personal issues.
After returning to the sport, Woods went two years without winning, but his game is back on track and he currently is ranked No. 2 in the world. Woods won the last tournament he played, three weeks ago in San Diego.
The White House made clear from the start of Obama's trip that there would be no coverage of him because he would be on vacation with no plans to leave the club, which remained open to members and their guests.
It arranged for the pool of reporters who traveled with Obama to bunk at a Holiday Inn about a 20-minute drive away in Port St. Lucie. Whenever the reporters were brought to the Floridian on the off chance that Obama might leave the property, they were taken no further than a maintenance shed beyond the club gates but on the edge of the grounds.
The presence at the Floridian of a professional journalist who was tweeted about Obama's game as he was playing, while White House reporters essentially were locked out, brought a sharp response from Ed Henry, the Fox News Channel correspondent who also is president of the White House Correspondents' Association.
"A broad cross section of our members from print, radio, online and TV have today expressed extreme frustration to me about having absolutely no access to the president of the United States this entire weekend," Henry said in a statement. "There is a very simple but important principle we will continue to fight for today and in the days ahead: transparency."
In response, Earnest, the White House spokesman said: "The press access granted by the White House today is entirely consistent with the press access offered for previous presidential golf outings. It's also consistent with the press access promised to the White House Press Corps prior to arrival in Florida on Friday evening."
Previous administrations have allowed brief news media coverage at either the beginning or the end of presidential golf games. Obama's policy generally is no coverage at all, but exceptions were made for separate outings he had in 2011 with House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and former President Bill Clinton.
Golf Channel said Rosaforte is a member of the Floridian who sent his tweets from the clubhouse. Rosaforte did not have access to the course or to Obama, the network said.
Obama is in Florida while his wife and daughters are on an annual ski vacation out West. He was due to arrive back in Washington on Monday night.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Shadow Morton, a 1960s pop-song writer and producer whose biggest credits include "Leader of the Pack" and "Remember (Walking in the Sand)," has died. He was 71.
Family friend Amy Krakow confirmed with The Associated Press on Sunday that Morton, born George Francis Morton, died Thursday in Laguna Beach, Calif.
Shangri-Las, the girls group from Queens, N.Y., gained fame after recording both "Remember" in 1964, and then "Leader of the Pack," which Morton co-wrote with Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich. Shangri-Las became famous starting in 1964 with Morton's hits.
Morton was born in Brooklyn and moved to Long Island as a teenager.
Krakow said he is survived by three daughters, a sister and three grandchildren.
His death was reported Friday by The New York Times.

A fireball ? yes, a fireball ? shocked California residents Friday night as it barreled through the sky above the Bay Area.?
In the trail (ha...ha...) of a meteor shower in Russia and that asteroid that caressed the earth, many have wondered if there's a connection between all these celestial close calls.?
There's not,?Astronomer Gerald McKeegan said, who labeled the firey mass a "sporadic meteor," USA Today reported. These random meteors can happen several times a day, and are responsible for bringing 15,000 tons of space debris to Earth a year.?
Over 35 sightings of the blueish mass were reported, as far?north as Fairfield and as far south as Gilroy, with reports from in Sacramento, Newark, Walnut Creek and St. Helena, NBC News Southern California reported.?
The meteor experts among us don't seem too ruffled by the blazing mass, however.?
?This is a very common occurrence,? said Jonathan Braidman, an instructor at the Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland, the Associated Press reported. ?What is uncommon is that it?s so close to where people are living.?
There's also the matter of that pesky Russian meteor shower stealing its thunder.?
?The media attention on the Russian thing got people?s attention, so they?re more likely to notice things in the sky,? said Mike Hankey, operations manager of the American Meteor Society, according to the AP.
